Thumbs down Leaking Gas - Box in front of gas tank

My Pontiac Montana stalled yesterday, I finally got it running again and it ran fine the rest of the day. However, when I went out today I noticed that there was a big wet spot under the van. After closer inspection, I found that it was gas and that it appeared to be leaking from a box that sits right in front of the gas tank. Anyone have an idea of what this is, and what may be going on?

Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum!

You didn't mention what year your van is? Any help here?

I am guessing it is the EVAP canister.

Take Care,

Re: Leaking Gas - Box in front of gas tank

Thanks! The van is a 2000 Pontiac Montana.

Dripping a drop or two every few seconds.... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is this something I can pick up from an automotive store and replace myself?

Pics are here: (near the bottom of the post)

Re: Leaking Gas - Box in front of gas tank

Hopefully it's something minor but...

I had a leak right in front of that box you speak of on my 98 Trans Sport back in January I took it to GM dealer and it cost me $960.00 CDN for new triple fuel lines (send/return) from that black box you speak of to the fuel rail.

The triple fuel lines are a combination of braded metal flex hose, stanless steel & plastic lines !?

Good Luck

Re: Leaking Gas - Box in front of gas tank

Based on your pictures, I believe that is the EVAP System Vent Valve, which is part of the emission control system (keeps fuel vapors from getting into the atmosphere). It gets opened & closed during certain diagnostics, and during normal operation of the van.

Since this is a "SMOG/Emissions" thing, it MAY be covered under warranty for an extended period of time, depending on your state. At least I have heard rumors of that kind of thing.

Anyway, I would consult a good mechanic or possibly a dealer, but don't let them charge you anything until you find out about the emissions warranty.

And above all, BE CAREFUL! Leaking gas is not to taken lightly!

Take Care,
