proper rotor wear

Are the brake pads suppose to extend out to the edge of the rotors so that there is no raised edge as the rotor gets worn? I noticed that the rotors I recently replaced had a raised edge on them telling me that the pads didnt extend to the edge of the rotor. Does this raised edge mean wrong size pads or something needs adjusting?

Every car I have seen always has a edge on the rotor because the pads don't go all the way to the end. Don't know why they are made that way but there must be a reason

Ya I've been checking it out on other cars and they all do. I was just wondering because the front rotors on my car have the pads extend to the edge of the rotor and those brakes were done by a mechanic.
