2001 LS question

My Sister let her 2001 Impala LS get hot and it seized up her on a road trip from Phoenix to So.Cal. My question is, She wants to sell it, so whats it worth? other than the engine it's in great shape. The dealer wants way too much to fix it, maybe You Guys can point Me in the right direction. I'm open for suggestions...............Thanks AB

several q's come to mind: First you don't say how much is too much to fix it. Do you still owe $$ on the car, a good used engine can be the best solution sometimes. Anyway 2001 LS are selling in midwest from 6900 - 11,900 depending on options and mileage/condition....so your range to exspect for a sell is 4000 - 6000 at best. Your buyer will most likely be a mechanic. Or make it a tax write off and donate to a High school tech center/ vocational center.

Yes, I should have mentioned that the dealer wants $5,000.00 (that's too much.)

Re: 2001 LS question

If the car is in great shape with the right miles give your sister 2 or 3 grand and pick up a junk yard motor for around $1000. iF YOU FIND A LOCAL HACK TO PUT IT IN IT WILL COST AROUND 6 TO $800 AND ANOTHER 200 TO CLEAN UP HIS MESS AND FIX WHAT HE WRECKS. good lUCK

Re: 2001 LS question

my sister killed her car too, my nephew said it looked like a stanley steamer coming down the road.

forget the junk yard motor. Find a local garage that will install jasper motors.
you can probably get it done for half of what the dealer wants. ... get your sister a bicycle and keep her out of the cars.

actually putting the money into and then sell it you probably will get the money back you spent on the motor and then some. alot more then if you sell as is.

Re: 2001 LS question

well yeah, that is a bit much for the dealer quote. you may want to check with a local engine rebuilder. many of these guys do exellent work and will charge you a great deal less than a Jasper as mentioned above though Jasper is a very good rebuilder and an easy swap out., but only the parts needed will be replaced buy a local rebuilder reducing the cost. dealer probably quoted using a crate engine replacement + Labor which is not far off what a jasper would cost if having it done by garage who works with Jasper. Even in smaller towns you find these garages. good luck on your decision

Re: 2001 LS question

If it were me i think I would take the factory rebuilt. For one a company like Jasper has more resources , more modern equip, and probably does thousands of motors. You do not know what you will get with a local rebuild shop,, it could be better than Jasper or something that turns around and bites you in the butt 6 month latter. The motor is probably toast, bad main bearings, warped heads, possibly scored cylinders, let me change that to definately scored cylinders. I would rather not see that engine again. They may not fly cut the heads enough and a few months or year latter, blown head gasket....etc . I think if the motor was just worn out and needed a rebuild a rebuild shop would be ok, in this case the motor is basically junk.
I think I would get the Jasper or factory motor, thats just me.
