Convertible motor relay issues

My girlfriend owns a 95 LeBaron Convertible that the top stopped working on. Figuring it was the convertible motor relay, I replaced it and the top worked fine - for a few hours. The second relay went bad as well. What could cause the relays to repeatedly go bad?
