Starter???

i have a 66 mustang with a 200 and auto tranny. my starter recently died on me, which isnt a surprise, it was old. this happened next to a garage so i pushed it over to him rather than take it home and do it myself. (stupid me ). I got the car back and it started ok, but i heard a "squeal" when it started. then it the squeal went away a little. Upon driving the car the squeal occurs again then dies off but now it squeals at higher rpms. The guy said it could be the transmission, but it was rebuilt recently so i dont think it is. it only happens in drive and reverse. i added some power steering fluid, which didnt help. Tomorrow im going to change the alt. and power steering pump belts. if those dont help does anyone kno what else it could be? the noise sounds like its coming from the starter "area", where it goes in the bell housing.
the mechanic who put the starter in wasnt much help. he said that it started and thtas all i asked him to do. and that "a squeal isnt generally a starter noise". i kno this but it didnt do it before. this is frustrating. please help
