valve cover bolts

while trying to change my valve cover gasket i stripped the last bolt, so there's only one bolt left on it. is there anyway i can get is off, it seems to be stripped in two of the eight corners of the bolt, or can i use some sort of sealant to keep my cover from leaking? thanks you guys

Re: valve cover bolts

Permatex gasket maker ($4.99 at Advanced Auto for a tube), or drill the hole and tap it, but gasket maker would be easier.

Re: valve cover bolts

i would say drill and tap it but you can replace the bolt with any ordinatar bolt it doesn't have to be the $8 bolt from a dealer. I snaped one of those in half and had to get it out with a screw driver and a hammer it took at least an hour and i put a normal bolt in it and it hasn't leak any oil or anything.

Re: valve cover bolts

Wait, did you strip out the threads or did you round off the bolt head?

I think the bolt is just jacked so he can't get it out, did you try vice grips? Also aren't there only 6 sides on the head of any bolt, hense the 6 point and the 12 bolt sockets?

Re: valve cover bolts

Go to Wal-mart, they carry sockets for removing bolts with "stripped" heads. Just hammer it right on, and it works by the same principle as a screw extractor.

Next time 6pt. bolt = 6pt. socket.
