ABS lights comes on and off

My husband had changed my front brakes on my 2003 montana in April and about a month later my abs lights came on. Then it would shut off if i would turn my van off to reset it, but lately its being staying on more. Sometimes I feel like when the lights are on, my brakes grind a little bit. He hooked it up to a hand held computer gadget he had and it didn't show anything was wrong. So I don't know if when I turn the van on the ABS isn't catching.. Or am I wrong. I know I read somewere about taking the wheel off and cleaning the speed sensor, but i was wondering if that sounds like something that should be done or somethng else.

Thank you

Welcome to AF. Unless you have an abs capable scanner, specifically, you will not get abs info. the system should be scanned for codes and wheel speed sensor inputs, to be able to compare sensor inputs from each wheel. This will help you determine which if any of the speed sensors may be bad.

I agree with maxwedge, you do need a capable scanner. These bearings are sealed, along with the ABS sensor inside too, so you cannot clean it. Usually, if you are not careful, especially doing the brakes, the two sensor wires that go to each connector can be damaged and give you intermittent ABS light. The problem is usually one of the front wheels.

Re: ABS lights comes on and off

When i was having this problem in the wintertime i went in to the shop and they told me that there was water or moisture getting into the plug. All that they did was pull the plug out and put some dielctric grease on it and it has not given me a problem since. hope this helps.
