1988 Caprice brakes
Hi,
I'm in need of replacing front brake discs and pads and I was thinking it would be good to beef'em up a little. Now I got stock 11" discs, what are the possibilities of making the thing stop better? Friend of mine recomended Raybestos brakes - but which ones? On rockauto there's plenty of them. Is it worth converting to 12"? And what about the pads? And for the future - how tough (and expensive) job is to replace rear drums with discs?

Replacing the drums is easy, they just come off. And if you have the right tools for taking out the springs for the pads in the rear it should be easy.
Just make sure the shoes go on right, one is shorter in length As for the front pads, i'd still go with a 11 inch rotor, but put cermaic pads on. Raybestos makes a cermaic pad.

Oh sorry, my bad.
Ive never done drum to disc conversions, but its seems complicated, and maybe some big $$ involved.

I will answer your question. The 11" discs are what you need to stick with as they have the 5x4.75" wheel bolt pattern. 12" discs need 5x5" wheels, as well as the proper steering knuckles (the 11" ones put the caliper in the wrong place for 12" rotors).
You can beef up the performance of the 11" ones quite handily just by using Carbon Metallic brake pads along with new rotors.

Not quite silicon212. There are 12" front disks available with a 5x4.75 bolt pattern. They were for the 1LE Camaros and they will work for something like this. He would still need the big spindles. But a bolt pattern change is not required.

Also put in braided steel lines b/c they dont expand like thw rubber ones. I have heard that you can feel a difference just from those.
