Does oven cleaner dissolve putty?

Just wondering, I need to repaint a model which has received a lot of putty work (both basic Tamiya and Milliput) and I was wondering: if I put it in oven cleaner, will it not only dissolve the paint but also dissolve the putty?
Does anybody have any experience with this?

Re: Does oven cleaner dissolve putty?

Best way to do it is sand the paint down.

Re: Does oven cleaner dissolve putty?

It is the underside of the car, so sanding is nearly impossible. I thought oven cleaner would work nicely, I just don't feel like puttying and sanding again

Re: Does oven cleaner dissolve putty?

Yes, oven cleaner generally will dissolve putty along with paint.

What type of paint is it? If it's acrylic you might get away w/an alcohol bath or window cleaner; that shouldn't affect the putty or plastic.

If it's Tamiya TS it might come off w/alcohol (99% isopropyl rubbing alcohol) w/o affecting the putty.

What's harder, sanding what you have or stripping and re-puttying?

Re: Does oven cleaner dissolve putty?

I just finished a similar project. I used 99% isopropyl rubbing alcohol and the putty (Tamiya 2-mix-to-1 type) turned out "OK". It still ate into where the putty is thin (like edges) but nothing major. The amount of work was similar to preparing a resin kit.
