'01 ford escape rear license plate light unit

OK, so can some one tell me how to get out the light socket unit for the rear license plate. There are two, and they have arrows pointing left on one and right on the other, and seem to be spring loaded, but when you slide them, they don't come out to get to the bulb. I don't want to pry them unless that is the way they are to come out. Someone please help me before I snap this thing!!! Thanks..

This is what my CD manual has in it for the Ford Escape: Sounds simple enough unless the lamp is seized into the socket.



License Plate Lamp
Removal and Installation

Remove the license plate lamp assembly.
Push the license lamp to the right and pull out.

Disconnect the socket from the lens.
Remove the bulb.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
