91 Acting Up!
Hello, I'm new to the board and have a question. I bought a 91 Caprice Classic about 8 months ago, and drove it about 70 miles home. Bought a new alt., battery, plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor. Now when I start it, it starts right up. But when I put it in gear, either foward or reverse and start up a hill it dies. It runs and idles great, but dies with a load! Please help.
Thanks in advance |

Re: 91 Acting Up!
It sounds like too little fuel, which could mean a clogged fuel filter, and/or tired fuel pump. The right way to check this would be to install a fuel pressure gauge near the TBI and to see if the fuel pressure drops when you put the car in gear and load the engine.
Assuming you lack the gauge, then you should replace the fuel filter anyway to see if it fixes the problem. If it doesn't, then you either need to do more careful troubleshooting, or replace the fuel pump. The fuel filter is located under the car, inboard of the driver's side frame rail, and sort of under the rear seat. HTH. |

Yeah that's what i would do my 94 sierra had that problem and i changed out the filter and it ran perfect after that , but now i got other problems
i would go with the filter first then check the pump and either bring it into a mechanic or just do it yourself it isn't that hard .Good Luck

Re: 91 Acting Up!
OK, heres what I've done! Talked to a friend and he said it may have water in the gas. (Because the lid was busted) Put some ISO-HEET in it and it did nothing. Changed the fuel filter and it did nothing. I did manage to get it out of the driveway and drive it down the road a bit. And when I'm on the gas hard it runs ok, but when I let off and coast (sometimes) or brake for a corner it dies (sometimes). Another friend of mine says it sounds like a stopped up catalytic convertor. Any more ideas to try before taking the tank out and replacing the fuel pump?
Thanks |

Re: 91 Acting Up!
I Have A 1991 Caprice, Sometimes It Runs Fine, Sometimes It's Like The Gas Has Been Cut Off To It. Just Before It Cuts Off You Can Here A Surge Of Air Through The Thottle Body. Any Idea What Could Be Causeing This???

Re: 91 Acting Up!
That is exactly what this is doing. I have to feather the throttle to keep it running!!
