Tune-Up!!!

Yes, that dreaded time is finally upon me... The previous owner of the vehicle claims that he had the timing belt replaced before but seeing that he knew absolutely nothing about cars and did not have the paper work to show for, I highly doubt anything of that magnitude was ever performed. At any rate, my '94 SL has about 74K on it at the moment and I am planning to do the tune-up this summer. Although I am still looking for a trusted shop that I could go to, I figured I'll have to get the parts one way or another so I'll start with that. After a bit of reading the FAQ and going through WinCAPS, this is what I have:

1-Belt, Valve Timing - MD193874 (timing belt, right)
2-Water Pump Kit - MD972005 (includes both the WP gasket as well as the O-ring according to the picture)
3-Pulley, Timing Belt Tensioner - MD140071

Here are the confusing ones:

4-Adjuster, Timing Belt Tensioner - MD185241 The weird thing about this is that right under that part number there is another number: MD319040
So uh...which one is the right one???
5-Pulley, Timing Belt Idler - MD151447 and underneath that is part number is: MD319022

Also, I've read at certain places that talks about the hydraulic tensioner....that's the same thing as the Adjuster, Timing Belt Tensioner, right?

So hmm...now where to purchase everything...

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Re: Tune-Up!!!

While looking online, I found Rockville Mitsubishi Parts Online: http://www.mitsupartsdirect.com
Click on 3000gt 3SI Stealth and they have an awesome tune-up bundle under June Specials. Also, if you click on Rewards Program, they might have even offered free shipping but it seems that the program ended today (the 28th). I tried calling them but I guess they're closed already.
But yeah, they have listed the part numbers that I have listed on on top as well so still confused....maybe they'll know what the whole deal is. If you guys are interested, I'd say buy the bundle from Rockville--one helluva deal I'd say (especially if it includes free shipping!!!).

Re: Tune-Up!!!

i've purchased a lot of part from thepartsbin.com in the past, but they gave me some wrong pulleys...or maybe i ordered the wrong ones? i dunno. i was happy with them, free shipping on orders over 50 bucks.

recently, i've got my parts from Rockville Mitsu. they know everything, and even though they are a dealer, they give GREAT prices if your a 3Si member (i can't remember if they confirmed i was a member or not, but you might just tell them you're a member (if ur not) and perhaps still reap the same benefits).

if i were you, i'd shop with Rockville Mitsu. very nice people, very knowledgeable over the phone, and over the internet via e-mail. PLUS, since its a genuine mitsu OEM part, you can count on its quality, rather than getting some random japan aftermarket part whose label you can't read.

Re: Tune-Up!!!

Sorry guys, I should have reported back sooner... Well, I spoke with Bernie from Rockville Mits and he said that the reason why there are 2 part numbers is because one replaced the other. So the ones on the bottom are the most recent in case anyone encountered this when they're ordering things online. Now if only they'd e-mail me back I will order my parts....

Re: Tune-Up!!!

well most likely they won't e-mail you back over the weekend, and since its july 4 holiday weekend, you're pretty much outta luck for a few days. but rockville mits guys are very punctual with emails. you could always call them up, and they can bring up all your info, confirm, pay, and have your order shipped. that might be the easiest way b/c they can give you price quotes on the spot and let you know of shipping charges.

Re: Tune-Up!!!

Slade I was gonna order my parts online too when I did my 120k tune up. I first went to 3sx cause they also have everything and then I checked out a bunch of other places.
The Shop was actually able to get me the best deals.
They got the Mitsubishi original timming belt and water pump dirrectly from mitsu and the pulleys and tensioners where aftermarket. Since the shops get a 20-30% discount it came out to be the best deal.
I assume you are having a shop do this since you mentioned a "trusted mechanic".

I didnt have one so I asked around other guys in the area that drove 3000GTs and simillar cars. I found a shop round town and the guy had Vettes, Porsches, and a 300ZX. I asked if he worked on all those cars he said yes, showed me his daily driver....a Twin turboed BMW325....earned my respect.

so ask around man. guys with Vettes and Supras need mechanics too, there has to be some one in town who has built a high performance DOHC V6 before.

Re: Tune-Up!!!

i got a quote to have a shop do my 60k, and it was just over $1000. I bought the parts myself and had a trusted local 3/s mechanic do the work for me and it came out a little over $700. Unless you are friends with the shops, I don't see how you could come out ahead since that is how they make alot of their money by charging so much more for parts.
