Coolant coming out on windshield

More coolant problems on the 1995 Lesabre.

A few days ago I noticed a fairly strong smell of coolant in the car.
No noticeable leaks from the engine compartment.
No noticeable coolant on the carpet.

In the evenings however there does seem to be a small amount of coolant condensing on the windshield, and it seems as if the upper dash vents (defroster vents?) are where the smell is coming from...mainly on the driver's side.

I presume this is a problem with the heater core.
But isn't the heater core on the passenger side?
Are there other likely candidates before I spend $45 on a new heater core?

Both the air conditioning and heat have been OFF the entire time this has happened.

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate this board.

Unhappy Re: Coolant coming out on windshield

Unfortunately, this does sound like the heater core! Coolant circulates through the core regardless of the on-off control on the controller. The doors between the heater and evaporator control where the air comes from. Have you checked the coolant level? You could have been lucky and caught the leak in the early stages before it soaks the carpet! In addition, if you have ever noticed, steam will rise to the highest point, therefore it would come out the defrost vent. The core is located under the passenger dash and not fun to change!! Good luck!

Re: Coolant coming out on windshield

Just to follow up.

This definitely was the heater core. Instructions elsewhere in this forum were very helpful in regards to how to remove and replace (search for heater core in this forum and you'll find them). It was not as difficult as I expected.

Heater core was approx $45 at O'Reilly's. All metal whereas the one I removed had plastic on it. Hope this one lasts.
