1990 Transport 3.1
The book says that when checking the ignition timing with an inductive timing light to disconnect the ESC lead (tan wire with black stripe) situated near front right suspension unit. I cannot find this lead. If I test the timing with this lead connected with the readings be accurate?

Re: 1990 Transport 3.1
OK- Found it. Last owner? had pushed the lead back into the harness, and it does make a difference of about 15 degrees if the wire is not grounded.
I may have found the fault in that the distributor pick up coil insulation appears to be disintergrating. So I will go for the full monty i.e. new pick up coil, new ignition module and new ignition coil - what the hell it must be one of those at fault. |

Re: 1990 Transport 3.1
Still waiting for parts to arrive from the USA. Engine cut out again and stayed dead ( no spark) for days.
Carried out tests on coil/Pick-up coil/etc and all checked out ok. Read a thread on another forum where some-one with same problem could only get the engine started if the AC was switched on??? So I went out to the car, pushed the AC button , turned the ign key and - the damn thing started. that was 2 days ago and it still starts and runs well. No trouble codes, all earth leads ok, everything works on the electric side, so where to begin. AC button on = sends signal to ECM to engage compressor and increase revs. So is the ECM at fault albeit intermittent, if so how to re-create fault again.

Re: 1990 Transport 3.1
Fitted new ign coil, new pickup coil and new ignition module.
Engine running like a swiss watch. I can now leave my Transport 3.8 GT at home and use the 3.1 for business use.
