Help, What engine do I have???

Ok, so I just got a 1967 Firebird. It has a V8, not really sure if it is the stock engine or not. The block id number is 475518 XW, I have looked all over the net and can not find that number any where.

Re: Help, What engine do I have???

I just looked threw my list of GM casting numbers and I can't find that number at all. I checked heads and blocks. You got me stumped. If you can post up a pic of the engine itself maybe someone can identify it.

Will do. I'll take a photo of that number close up and also of the engine. I'm new to the old car scene so thanks for your help.

Re: Help, What engine do I have???

I'm working on getting it posted. The block is painted the Pontiac blue; it has a Quadrajet 2 barrel carb. Now I'm trying to figure out which tranny it has. The car originally had a 6 in it and not the 8 that is in it now. Any easy way to tell if it's a Powerglide or a 350 tranny in it? Driving it around I would say it's a Powergilde, I haven’t gotten to drive it out on the freeway or anywhere with a long straight away.

Is that number on the head or the block. I can't make out what I am looking out.

Re: Help, What engine do I have???

It's on the block. If youwhere looking at the engine with the hood up, it is on the left hand side of the water pump. It is stamped at a 45 degree angel.

Re: Help, What engine do I have???

Thanks for the tranny ino. I was able to count the bolts and look at the shape of the tranny pan. I counted 14 bolts and its pretty much square so I'm pretty sure it a powerglide. Still cant pull up anthing on the engine though.

Re: Help, What engine do I have???

I would guess the motor is the original 325HP 400 c.i.d. it was born with. Thats what the numbers *XW* would indicate.

I wouldnt worry about looking at bolt on equipment trying to come up with a timeline. If it was an all original car, you would already know it. They used that block for 3 or 4 years, wich means the number on the heads will probably help, not only to identify the year, but more importantly the HP. In 1967 the XW 400's were making 325HP. By 1969 they were upgraded to 375HP.

Im not sure really but i dont think a powerglide would be hanging out on a 400 cid. Usually the 400's came with a 400 transmission.

Once you figure out the number on the heads, use this chart to figure out what kind of power you might have.

Re: Help, What engine do I have???

After looking at the vin and body tag, i figured out the car came with a 6 cyl, not the V8 that is in it now. So I think they left the powergilde tranny in their when they did the swap. The engine code of XW was also used either in the late 70's or early 80's also. I still cant figure it out.

Re: Help, What engine do I have???

1st that number you gave will be a machining number for the block, its stamped on a machined part of the block ... A casting number will be on the side of the block (probably drivers side) and be cast into the block ... should be much bigger #'s & letters and they will stick out from the side. Get a casting number, im pretty sure thats what everyone is trying to look up. Keep in mind this block could have came from any gm car that would bolt to the orig transmission.

2nd if you show a pic of the whole engine it may help someone give you clues what family of engine it is ... example what intake & exhaust manifolds it has on it (if they are stock). (take the air cleaner off for a better view of the intake manifold)

Sorry I can't help you more, but others who posted in here seem to know more then I ever could. The heads typically had a casting number on the front side of head, again it will be cast in, not a stamped number ... but a stamped number will help identify which machining it is ... if you can find a list of the machining numbers (which may be hard to get).

good luck, post enough info and im sure someone on here will point you in the right direction.

Re: Help, What engine do I have???

"wallaceracing.com" has more accurate "coding" info for Pontiacs than any other site I've been to. That XW is one of several years. It could be a 400, a 350 or a 301.

The date code is cast into the block near the distributor. It will be a 4-digit "alpha-numeric" code. The first digit is a letter depicting the month of casting (A=Jan, B=Feb and so on). The second two digits are the day of that month. The last digit is the last number of the year. A little logical deduction will get you the rest of the way. EXAMPLE: A218 "Jan 21, 1968" (for the '68 model year). That would be the 400. The 350 will say "350" on the driver's side of the block, and would be the '78.
The casting number of the heads is on the two center exhaust ports, where they protrude from the head. These numbers will aid greatly in identification.

QuadraJet is a 4-bbl. carb. There is a 2-bl. that LOOKS like Q-Jet, without the secondaries. If that's the carb you have, chances are the engine is the 301...

The 6-cylinder PowerGlide found in '67 Firebirds is NOT compatible with Chevy OR Pontiac V-8 bell housings. We have one here now (OHC 6). The 2-speeds behind the V8s were not PowerGlides, but "Super Turbine 300". The only thing it shares with PowerGlide is the shift pattern and number of forward gears. No parts "fit". NOT a good choice for a performance build.

Re: Help, What engine do I have???

The carb says Quadrajet with number 17056266 running vertical on the drivers side by the linkage.

The casting number of the heads that is in the middle is 061. And to the right is a date code (from what I've read on the web) of C 237.

I cant find the date code by the distributor.

The number on the exhaust manidold is 9796992.

Still not sure which engine it has. And to make things worst, while taking a bolt off to get to the thermastate, the bolt head came off!
