Grand Cherokee Start then Dies
I just bought a 1994 Grand Cherokee 5.2L Magnum 318 V8 with automatic transmission. It starts up right away, then dies 2 seconds later. At first I am thinking it is the intake sensor or something to do with the startup sequence. Or even cap, wires. But I can start it up, it runs for a second or two then it just bogs down, wimps out and dies. One thing I have noted is the upper radiator hose is busted completely off, and there are signs of coolant in the air intake box (which is right beside the upper hose). No coolant in the engine oil, which is good news. So it might have something to do with the coolant temp sensor not reading any coolant in the radiator/waterpump. However I think it is the factor alarm system.
But my gut is telling it has something to do with the factory alarm. Because when I hooked up the battery terminals the headlights blink like a blinker. And it is in sequence with the SECURITY light on the dash. Does anybody know how to disengage the factory alarm system? I dont want to take it to a dealership and get ripped off. I have done some research on the net and I have ran across a couple of ideas. For the security system I think I have to play around with the locks. Unlocking and locking the rear hatch or doors. Or there might be a kill switch on this thing. But its factory alarm so I doubt theres a kill switch. Anyone have any other ideas? It cant be that hard. As the jeep starts up, but dies 2 seconds later. Im almost certain its the alarm. But do factory alarm systems allow the engine to even startup, thats whats puzzling me. Any input would be helpful. I just want to atleast get the thing running so I can start replacing plugs, wires, distributor cap, water pump, alternator, radiator, hoses, clamps, etc etc etc. Thanks |

Re: Grand Cherokee Start then Dies
Sounds like you've got yourself a project. . . . but to the question: to clear the factory alarm, close all doors and use the key to 'unlock' (whether the doors are locked or not) the driver's door. That should reset the alarm after a battery disconnect. . . . and yes, as a veteran of 'i just reconnected the battery and it's 40 below out now why the hell won't my car start' . . . it does have a kill switch . .

Re: Grand Cherokee Start then Dies
Yes it has to do with security alarm. I did a search on here and found many people with the same problem as me. I fixed the alarm issue. Now it just wont crank. Battery is hooked up to a battery jump starter, tons of juice. It just wont start now. It did however start then die 2 seconds later with the security armed. I am going to check the fuses today and do an internet search. I might get a buddy to hook up his car to my battery and hookup the battery jump starter box. Because the voltage meter in the dash is just to the left of verticle. Its a long shot I know. Other things I will be checking is fuel pump, alternator and starter, starter solenoid.
Any other ideas???? Thanks |
