The keyhole is between the license plate and passenger tail light, right above the mercury logo. Did you try unlocking the truck switch with your key ?

I have a 99 and the rear is almost the same, BUT there is a key hole. Look at your MGM Logo/Badge and scan, at the same level, to your right. There will be an indentation in the rear reflector a little to the right of center between the logo and the beginning of the tail light. I admit it is hard to see if you are close to the car. Try squatting down so the area is at eye level and I am sure you will see it.

ahhh, now i see. someone thoughtfully bashed out that lens, and removed the lock cylinder. that explains the round hole i took for a missing lamp holder.
more fun in store.
thanks for all the replies, i'm going to train a gerbil.
