I have a sv21 camry.
Today after driving about 3kms, went to accelerate and the engine stalled would start but idle rough. Managed to reverse out of traffic and call road assistance. After engine cooled, it started normally but after reaching normal temp it died again.Has new fuel pump plugs and leads, starter motor. Has had service & tune up recently.Tecnician said fuel mixture was too rich and also should check timing belt. Had to be towed home. This is the first time for this problem. Any clues, anyone! Thanks!! |

Re: 1987 camry dies after warming up
Check the ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor with a DVM and the specs from any manual. It may have gone out of spec and is sending a signal to the computer that the engine is always cold, when it is not. That would produce a very rich mixture all the time. This rich mixture is needed to start and run a cold engine, but could flood out and stall a warm engine.
Also check the coil inside the distributor, again with the DVM and the specs from the manual. They have a tendancy to be a troublesome area on this generation Camry. They develope a hairline crack and short themselves to ground inside the distributor. This type of problem is generally worse in damp weather, but can cause problems in any type of weather. A third possibility is a weak fuel pump. Your technician can put a gage on the fuel rail and check fuel pressure. Weak fuel pumps have a tendancy to go out as they get warm. Good luck. Mike |

Re: 1987 camry dies after warming up
Alraedy has new fuel pump.
Will get the other items checked. It looks like the distributor has already been replaced at least once in the cars life (second hand)I have only had this car 6 months. Will let you know how Iget on Thanks Mati |

Turned out to be
1. The alternator had died (unusual for a camry I'm told) 2. ECT sensor (which tested OK 3 weeks ago) 3. Air intake sensor Car runs a lot quieter and smoother, but my wallet is a lot lighter! |
