1990 Galant GSX/ 1991 Galant VR4 project

I bought both a 1990 Galant GSX and a 1991 Galant VR4. The VR4 was in an accident and is totalled, not even worth salvaging as far as i could tell because the cross member was in the wrong spot. It just so happens that the cross member being shoved over means the engine in the GVR4 (which was freshly rebuilt) had the front mount torn off the block (holes and all). So that block is toast.

The Galant VR4 is 106/2000 for those of you keeping track. It is quite literally the earlist Galant VR4 i have EVER seen.

I tore out the interior of both cars and am in the process of putting the Galant GSX back together with the wonderful leather interior that was in the VR4. The wiring harness was swapped as well as the Eprom ECU.

The dash is also being swapped in, badge and all.

With the car came some very mild goodies. I received a ported 14b turbo, 2.5 inch TBE, new K&N filter, new battery, mbc, turbo-timer and an A-pillar mounted dual gauge pod with boost and EGT gauges. I recently bought 194NA bulbs to replace the standard bulbs on it, so that it would match the factory amber color. I have also just finished the wiring so that the gauges wont' be on unless the car is on, and the factory foglight switch is in the "on" position.

Both cars came with brand new tires.

I'm also swapping the brakes over and am planning on replacing the lines with new factory hose. The brakes are the ones on the VR4, so they are fairly large and stop very well.

I'm still a long way from being finished and hit a snag when i found out the engine wasn't going to just drop in. Otherwise i'd be driving the thing around now and picking on some poor ricers.

Things left to do:

wire in the relay for gauges/fogs
swap rear ends/driveshafts/axles/hubs front and rear.
rebuild the engine on the n/t block that came from the GSX
put the rest of the interior in.
swap the tinted windows from the VR4 on to the GSX
get an EGT probe for the gauge (it is lacking)

Long term plans(next summer):
Evo3 16g turbo
2g ported ex. manifold
evo 8 FMIC
550cc injectors
IC sprayer
meth/h2o injection
harpipes
GM 3" blow thru
dsmlink
hard pipes for EVERYTHING
Relocate the battery to the rear
maybe a 4 bolt rear end
and hopefully 25lbs of boost
and that should put me in the 12's

The thing should be running and driving around by the end of july, but again, no promises

Thanks to Rob (cassiesman), Trent, Ramone, Rasmey, Adam, Stu, Malcolm, and Kim for helping me take this thing apart and put it back together. I really couldn't have done it without you guys (well maybe, but its nice having you all around)

^^ me before i learned the front mount was broken because ... at that point, all we had to do was hook it up and start it. I have a very pissed off persona about me now because the fudgin' thing is BROKEN!!

Not to mention we got bored when Stu came over and started hitting the front windshield with hammers...

Re: 1990 Galant GSX/ 1991 Galant VR4 project

ok interior is in and it looks freaking AWESOME except for the small tumor my dash has just grown...

it's ok, i'll figure out how to undo it

oh yeah, engine gets rebuilt later this week and monday i'm putting everything back together. that gives me... the next 3-4 days to get the rear end swapped and brakes swapped over.

Re: 1990 Galant GSX/ 1991 Galant VR4 project

Interior is in the Galant GSX, the leather seats are incredibly comfortable, and the musty smell has finally subsided after frequent treatments. might also have something to do with the car being used by smokers..

Engine(s) leave my house sunday and by monday afternoon should be re-assembled. I got a head set and oil pan gasket from o'reilly's and i just received the ARP head studs via fed ex this afternoon.

I'm also going to go purchase another set of jackstands so i can get the rear ends out of both cars and finally get the car setup to run. new Brake hoses, o2 sensor, and battery and it'll start right up by wednesday.

nothing better than a slightly quick 4door turbo awd and ready for some ricers

Re: 1990 Galant GSX/ 1991 Galant VR4 project

besides the drivetrain orientation, ... i think it was everything.

wiring harness is dif. (90 vs. 91), brakes are larger on the vr4, final drive is dif., engine is turbo as opposed to n/t, wheels, sideskirts, front grill, transmission. rumor as well, that the front mount is mounted slighly dif., but i'm using the n/t block with turbo internals so i automatically remedied that.

if you don't have both cars i wouldn't recommend a swap, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. luckily i got them both.

Cool project. Are the rims from the VR4 bent? If not you should definately put them on the gsx

Re: 1990 Galant GSX/ 1991 Galant VR4 project

i def. plan on it and they were checked the day after the accident. it is literally a miracle it wasn't bent b/c the stupid person hit exactly on the wheel. I think i may need to get some paint and re-paint them some and polish up the lip since they are not polished like they were from the factory. and that was the smallest of the issues the car had back then!!!

paint is cheap at work, so is practically every car part i get. brand new bosch o2 sensor was like... 45$

and i think the GSX wheels are being sold as well.

Re: 1990 Galant GSX/ 1991 Galant VR4 project

its a dsm, they never run!!

sorry but money and unnaccountable people have pushed this back quite a bit.... mostly the unnaccountable people, but if it takes much longer i'll have some aftermarket goodies already installed on this bish..... like a nice painted fmic and some hard piping.

that'll be if it takes another month though, not anytime soon. or if someone buys this n/t longblock and someone else gets the trans/drive/rear dif. otherwise it'll just stay stock. i'll get pics and stuff when it is all done, and it is almost to the point where a "sneak peak" might be given soon.
