Talking Hyde's turning radius has been made a 1/3 tighter ...

After we pass the finish line on a hillclimb run, we continue on the road until we get to the designated "turn around" spot and then head back from where we just came from to stop in a line. Once everyone from a run group is in line, we head back down the hill.

The turn around spots tend to be very tight. With today's hillclimb, if I pulled all the way over to the right, stopped, turned the wheel to complete lock for a left turn and slowly pulled out I could just barely make the complete turn around without edging off the road. It would be fair to say that "turn around" was exactly Hyde's turning radius.

So ... I decided to see if we could improve on that a bit

The blue line below indicates Hyde's turning radius on my first time through "turn around." The red line indicates Hyde's turning radius on my last time through turnaround.

In short, I spun the car around and ended up back against the curb I started from! Generally I would have ended up on the other side of the road (obivously) from doing the normal, slow turn around.

... what? Just a photo?

... no video?

.. no proof?

And you complained that burnouts in road race trim would of been expensive..tsk tsk.

I did that once in the Z28 while making a left turn on the street, it was drizzling out and a Van was coming, so I slipped the clutch a bit but the ass just swung out, I caught it in time and I did a perfect 90 degree left hand turn with a bit of exit 'drift' down the middle lane of the street. It was perfect, afterwords I kept asking myself how that went so well, I didn't plan on it, it just happened.... to not press my luck I turned traction control back on for the remainder of my drive home.

Whow, awsome.
you dont do any damage to the steering rack by turning it to full lock when you do that?

I'm not sure how that'd do damage? You turn it full lock, then gun the motor, once the car is in motion and the tail end swings there isn't any load on the steering rack as far as I can tell, the steering becomes lighter cause the ass of the car is rotating...

hmm i dunno... hard to say, but I'd just assume that it wouldn't be harmful, only to... say your rear tires.

Re: Hyde's turning radius has been made a 1/3 tighter ...

Im just speculating cause of the latteral stress to the bushings on the steering rack. I guess every so often it wont hurt its just that I see shit like that and I wanna go out and do it now.

Go do it then... as long as you don't Initial D yourself into a curb or tree... you'll be fine if you do it once in a while.

I'd laugh really hard if you got kicked out of the competition for your little stunt.

I'd be willing to bet that his little 180 was the safest thing he did during that entire event. Why kick him out?

That wasn;t a burnout, it was short spin.
If I did a burnout ... there would be no tires left

Don't know ... car drove home fine

That is a genuine concern, but I don't know that they would really fuss about it. At some hills, people do a LOT worse things at turnaround. At the Weatherly event, there is a house right at turnaround and all of the neighborhood people sit around their lawn holding up signs requesting "burnouts" and such ... it's kinda of fun.

Re: Hyde's turning radius has been made a 1/3 tighter ...

He was trying to do what I did ... a "power u-turn."

clawhammer, I spoke with an official today and asked about my "u-turn" and he said that was fine. As long as no other cars are in the area and I could complete the move safely he was okay with it

Re: Hyde's turning radius has been made a 1/3 tighter ...

I auto-cross, and almost every event I go to, they tell us that the competition is to be kept on the course only. That means no warming of tires, doughnuts, etc in the staging area.

I've seen that idiot crashing so many times now haha.

Nice turn, kinda reminds me of htat kid that parallel parked by lighting up the tires and sliding the one end into the spot (FWD if I remember correctly).
