1994 Corolla half shafts
It seems like this should be fairly easy, but I'm having a helluva time pulling the left side half shaft from the automatic transaxle
 . It's free and clear from the hub, but I can't seem to find a spot to pry the other end from the transaxle because it's recessed into the side of the transaxle. (Right side is easy to get at, by comparison.) Chilton says something about using a slidehammer and hub nut wrench to pull it (I don't get it). The manual covers '88 to '97, so the procedure is similar for many models. Can anyone give me any tips? Am I missing something? Thanks!!!

Well, after sleepin' on the problem overnight..and getting a look at a Haynes manual photo, I finally got the driver's side half shaft to pop. It was a matter of getting the right pry bar (an edge wider than a screwdriver) wedged in the right spot on the shaft (had to turn the shaft to find the wide groove) at the right angle (I had to add a sliver of 1/2" wood to pry against) with the right leverage (it took a while get it right)...and then giving the pry bar a sharp, but not too hard, rap with a hammer. Would have been easier working on a lift rather than jack stands, but.... Anyway, maybe this will help someone else struggling with one of these.

Thanks for posting most just get their answer and go on their marry way!!!
unfortunatly I think I'm too late, I boogered up a seal and then pulled the shaft apart inside the boot. Dont know if I can fix it or not. Edit: ok Finally got mine out and found you must just use even pressure with a stiff pry bar. Was using a wonder bar which is kind of springy. Pry, then rotate a bit and pry again. when you find the spot where the internal "C" clip is in the right position shaft will pry out fairly easily. Last edited by xt477; 10-14-2006 at 10:47 AM.

I should have mentioned in my description that the first pry bar I used was a bit springy, too. The one that worked was shorter and absolutely rigid..no bend at all.

I tried the pry bar method and just wasn't having much luck. I made sure the lock ring was lined up and gave the axle a good tap with my hammer and it popped right out. I think if I had more than 12 inches of clearance from my garage floor to the bottom of my Rolla when on jack stands things would work a lot easier.
