Rear wheel hop ?
Hey gang.
So heres the story. 2003 ZR2. 45,000 miles Today I pulled out in to traffic with a little less room between myself and on coming traffic then I would like. So I had to get on it a little bit. I was making a right hand turn pointed slightly uphill, and the right rear tire broke loose and spun. I got a bad hopping of that wheel. Now I have noticed in the past that when taking off from a stop, I feel a feeling in that corner like that tire wants to hop. kind of a up and down motion in the axle or wheel area. I've put new 10.5x31x15 BFG longtrails on it since I got it a few months ago. I felt it both before and after the tire change so I doubt it's a tire problem. Any Ideas ? A bad wheel ? a bent axle ? please dont anyone say the word Diff. Thanks for any help Baja |

Re: Rear wheel hop ?
It's perfectly normal Baja, especially with leaf springs. If you want to drasticly reduce it get some traction bars made up.
A google search will show you a few of the modern style, but a old school mechanic or welder can make you a old school set up out of scrap iron. |

Re: Rear wheel hop ?
Do you have posi - G80 on glove box sticker - cause without it you get the one wheel with least traction driving thus the hop on any heavy accel on corners (unweigh one side more than other).

Re: Rear wheel hop ?
Posi would make the whole rear jump, Believe me after switching the stock open diff to the posi flooring it from a stop or around a corner you will feel the rear jump. Same thing with burn outs. Doesnt help much since i have 275 60/15 tires in the rear. That thing cant loose traction unless you want it to, does a nasty slide if you punch it in the rain.
All in all rear end hop happens, like OBP said its more common with leaf springs.

Cant remember who posted it but if you see it give yourself credit Don't ever look at cars as just imports or domestics. Just because a car is made in a certain country doesn't mean that it is anything like another car from that country. An example of this is Mitsubishi reliability, just because they are Japanese doesn't mean that they are as reliable as a Honda or Toyota. Cardomain |

Re: Rear wheel hop ?
Yep, only way to stabilize that is going to be as OBP said, get yourself some torsion bars made up and properly set in place. I only get wheel hop off-road with a spirted throttle in 2x4 mode. I am a gentle on road/pavement driver otherwise.

Re: Rear wheel hop ?
Start looking into slapper bars for it.
