LIM update and question

As of right now I am about half way done with the disassembly part of replacing the LIM. So far not too many difficulties just a few miss typed socket sizes on the instructions I have, and a few hard to reach bolts. But other then that everything seems to be coming along smoothly. My question is that once I got the upper intake off I noticed that there was a lot of carbon deposits in there. So is there anyway to clean those out without messing up anything in the engine, or does it really matter that I clean them out (will it really help anything). Remember the engine is almost halfway apart so there is no starting the car and using SeaFoam or anything like that.

Re: LIM update and question

When I cleaned out my intake manifold when I changed out engines I just used some brake parts cleaner and some shop towels. It gets the build up off really easy, dries fast and wont hurt your engine. After time it will build back up but once you get it back together you can use seafoam.
Good Luck!

Re: LIM update and question

Cleaning the carbon out of the intake is a good idea. Use throttle body cleaner while or carb cleaner with the upper intake off the engine. Pay special attention to the egr passageways as they can block up. You may need a small wire brush to clean it out. Also clean the throttle body while you have it off as the back side of the throttle body will carbon up and cause performance problems.

One other thing. Make sure you change the oil before starting the engine once you finish the LIM gaskets.

Also it probly wouldnt hurt to clean the lower intake the same way, that is if its carboned up too.

Re: LIM update and question

Well I was finally able to finish it all up. Only taking 4 days about 15 hours to do it all. I probably would have been finished at around 10 hours if it was for the fact that I had to take the front head off. This was b/c when I got the valve cover off the front I found quite a surprise... ROCKS. Someone I would have to say before I bought the car had taken off the oil filler cap and put a handful of gravel in it. I could only guess in some attempt to blow up the engine. Luckily they failed and I was able to clean all of them out from around the valves and rockers. But when taking a closer look I saw more little rocks clogging up the holes that the oil goes into, and in order to clean them out I had to take off the head. But it's all good b/c I got the rocks out. All in all it wasn't too difficult to do other then a pain in the ass bolt/nut here and there. Also I think this fixed my problem not quite 100% sure yet but I'm going to let everything get settled back and all the gaskets get settle, then I'll know for sure.
