95 4.3 timing

I have a 95 4.3 W engine code. I replaced the distributor and am having a time trying to time it.
The engine has the black plastic timing chain cover, not the metal like the 95s I’ve seen.
Also there are no markings on the cover for TDC, just the tab to align the mark on the ‘pulley’.
All that’s OK, but my problem is that I am unable to locate the tan and black wire connector to disconnect the advance. I removed the PCM under the dash and there is NO single tan wire and connector. I went under the hood and traced the wire harness from the distributor and still don’t see it. Is that the proper way to time the engine with the plastic cover on the front of the engine? Does the 96 have that tan wire with the black stripe? Maybe it is a mixture of systems.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, LS

Thank you for your reply.
YES! It helped a lot. It stated the wire was located Behind the carpet, I didn't think to look there but now have the plan! My thanks again.

Re: 95 4.3 timing

Is your ECM on the coolant recovery tank in the engine compartment or under the dash?

It is under the dash, but I went out there and I looked Everywhere and I could not locate the tan/blk wire under the carpet. The manual stated that it was about four inches from the ECM so I check inside and outside with no luck.
Also it has the 16 pin connector under the dash like the OBDll not the small one like the OBDI and the distributor is not locked, it must be timed.

Pull back the passenger side carpet against the firewall. You will see the harness coming through a grommet. Off of that you will see a tan wire on its own. Follow it, you will find the connector to seperate.

Re: 95 4.3 timing

OK, thanks, I was looking for it coming down from the ECM area and did not go beyond the sound padding. I will get into it.

Re: 95 4.3 timing

The timing wire on my 89 was also behind the passenger carpet in the footwell. I had to take the kickpanel off to be able to pull the carpet down but then the wire was easy to access. I changed the distributor on my 89.

Re: 95 4.3 timing

I went out there and saw that I will also have to remove the panel and the ECM cover to get the carpet pad loose.
Thanks. LS

Re: 95 4.3 timing

I took the ECM cover off but I think that I could have got away with just the kick panel. To get the kick panel off I had to take off the plastic strip tha runs along the door opening.

Re: 95 4.3 timing

Well.. I got called out of town for the next ten day's and didn't get a chance dig into it so I guess I'll have to wait till I get back. Before leaving I did see a rubber grommet that held the radio antenna that was under the carpet itself but not the under the pad.
I am guessing that the timing wire is directly below that and under the carpet pad. When I get back I will rip everything out and if I still don't see it I will take a picture of the whole thing and post it.
Thanks for the help Mark.
