I don't know much about car so I thought maybe someone here could give me a hand. Whenever I take a hard right, or left turn, my car shakes and buckles. I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cylinder with a quadtrac alltime all wheel drive. I have had the transfer case replaced and four new tires put on, yet it still does it. The transfer case that i had put in was used. Also is a viscous coupling the same as a transfer case?? Thanks

Well I have the same year/model/engine as you so mabey I can help. I havent had this problem much (it has happened a couple of times). I think that you may need to check the axel to see if its not bent or anything. Just look around and make sure nothing is dripping or cracked or looking not right. But, to be honest, I really cant help you on this. I know exactly what you mean, and the words are on the tip of my tounge. Ill post again if I can think of it.

Okay, after doing much research on this website, it seems that it is my niscous coupling(VC) that is causing the problem. Is it possible that I got another transfer case with a bad VC? Another question, is it possible that because I ran with a bad VC for a while that now the used transfer case and VC that I have installed is working okay, but the CV joints/ axles are causing the problem? And is it possible to take out the front drive shaft to stop this without any damage, or would the CV joints still cause the jerking motion on turns? Last question, how do I tell if a CV joint has gone bad? Thanks for your help this place really is great for information.

how many miles are on the case. were they able to tell you where you got it? The vc is a very common problem in the quadra trak. Thats why jeep no longer uses it with a viscous. It is very likely that you got 2 bad quads. I had the same issue and swapped mine out with a select trak. Best thing I ever did for my 95 grand. Unless you drove it a lot with a lot of in turn bucking you probably did no harm.

I have a 1994 All Time 4-Wheel drive JGC. I had a problem with turning left or right with mine. It seemed like I was going to tear the axles off. It was almost like tire hop or drag while turning. I saw all the posts about the VC in the transmission. I found the boot around my axle on the right side was ripped and the cv joint was dry. I changed out the axle with a new one and all my turning problems went away. I now can turn with no problems. So mine was not the VC in the transmission. It was an easy job to change out and did not cost a bunch either. I did it myself so no labor charges. It only cost about $100.00 for the axle. Look at your axles first.

Deffinate symptoms of a bad VC.

If the case was used when it was put in your Jeep, its very likely that the VC in it was already bad. One of the mechanics I took mine to before doing the swap myself said that the average lifespan of a coupler is about 60-80k. The CV joints up front may also be suspect if the jeep has been doing this for a while because all that binding/bouncing is quite hard on them. . .

Also, last thought . . . one way to determine if its just the diffs or CV's needing lubing/replacement is this: Once everything is warmed up, bring the Jeep to a stop, leave it in drive and crank the wheel. On a shot VC the Jeep will 'pulse' power to the front wheels resulting in a rythmic clicking/clanking noise from up front. . . .

hardisk c, should i attempt to turn after my car is warm or not move and turn the wheels? I If I try to move when my wheels are all the way cut, I get the hopping but if I dont and keep my foot on the brakes and cut the wheel I get no noise or movement other than the normal powersteering noise.

From my experience, it would happen after the car'd been warmed up & driven a while. I would notice a rythmic *thok* coming from the front end when the wheels were cocked one way or the other & the vehicle was at a standstill. . . VC R&R and no more.

Was putting in my b/c as others have states, if the CV's are gone or the diff fluid on the limited slip models is cruddy, then those can also be a cause of the bindy/hopping attitude of the car during a turn, but if your getting a pulse in the drivetrain like above, it's further back than the axle. . . hence the VC. . . .
