Domestic Grenades Itself

Yeah you read right.

My beloved Nova grenaded its transmission. Stupid car! haha.

Last few weeks, I noticed the tranny more or less slipping durring hard acceleration.

So after tuning the Carb to what i thought was a good setting. A couple of quick romp sessions around near my home I felt the transmission sorta... well hard to explain it just didnt feel right. Ya probably know what i mean when your car isnt running right, you can tell right off the bat?

I tried to tempt fate and get one last test on the Carb settings... and PANG it went. No more power to wheels. Coasted to the side of the road. Tranny fluid all over the road. All I could say was "awww cripes..."

So after an embarissing AAA tow home, The Nova finds itself back in the back yard. Awaiting its new transmission.

Kinda cool to know you have too much torque to blow up a transmission... but its gonna cost me $1500 to fix it. Being 19 and on a fixed income, its gonna be a while.

This gives me a good reason to up grade to a 700R4 from TPI. I get an Overdrive gear... and a Factory warranty that says it'll take up to 500+ horsepower.

So, Im out of the game for a while.

Sorry about your luck. I hate when crap like that happens. You have to look at the good side. It gives you a good excuse to replace it with a better unit.

yeah i get overdrive now! *dances* yayyyy

but at the cost of millions of dollars. haha.

im no expert when it comes to Transmissions. but it more or less looks like one of the gears sorta dis-inter-grated into several pieces and broke the forward seal, thus is why it leaked out its fluid.

oh well, like you said shit happens!

you blew up a TH-400 with only 425 HP and 440ft/lbs? either that thing must have been seriously beaten on or had a defective part in it, because they definetely should be able to take more than that. I also thought that the 700-R4 trannys were notably weaker than 400s. at the strip, GM people usually run either a built Powerglide or a 400. from what i've read and seen, a 700-R4 is more on par with a TH-350 in terms of durability (about a 400HP safe threshhold stock) Is the 700-R4 you're looking at built up at all? I know that when they're rebuilt to handle serious power, they make awesome trannies.

yes sir, my Turbo 400 was a hand me down from a friend who was running a stronger power plant. he used it for quite some time till he upgraded to a full racing tranny.

and yes sir, the 700R4 normally isnt that strong but TPI offers a aftermarket 700R4 thats built to withstand 500+hp and it comes with a warranty. So i hope i'll never have this problem again with transmissions.

stupid car... blowing up my transmission... egad the money pit continues! hahah

it locked up on the 101, thats where it died, the syncro gear cracked in 3 places and got wedged in the gears so it couldnt shift, when it died finally it was because I tore my clutch to shreads trying to do 3rd gear starts, like, a hundred times in a row.

heh, if ya gonna question the black warhorse, make sure you got your facts right

hahahaha, I know that feeling, had that happen to me in the trans am, course I was going 90 with it, which was about its top 385 torque and 180 hp with 3.73's dosent allow a very high top speed.

Pulled off freeway in Ventura (it seems to kill all my cars...hmmm, maby driving 100 miles each way everyweekend is not good for it...I wonder why ) steam shooting onto my windshield thinkin it was a fire...now THAT was a great night
