As far as the U.S. goes the eclipse/talon/laser in any form(favorably 4g63) or year has a bigger aftermarket selection than the Lancer does, the lancer is relatively new in the u.s. so naturally its the reason for its small aftermarket selection. In my opinion the aftermarket's response to the U.S. lancer is "s l o w". When the new styled eclipse came out a few years ago it was better in the aftermarket area than vs the lancer's at this time. Even though the base eclipse is SOHC doesn't mean it sucks, with 2.4 litres its a big four cylinder and a number of turbo kits has came out to make that engine surpass the GT stock V6 version. The GT V6 eclipse has turbo's and superchargers available for it and i've heard numbers in the 500hp+ level for this V6 , although i would like to see those dyno tests for myself. I don't think its hard to believe though knowing its a V6(stronger) and @stock it has over 200hp.
The most popular nitrous kits for the GT eclipse's help it produce over 349hp easily.

If u wanna talk Japan-SPEC mitsubishi's than that can be a different story.

well if you're talking about the 2000+ eclipses, i'd take ESCO's post into consideration.

well here's my experience with my lancer and a friend's 97 eclipse RS.

my friend has a 97 eclipse rs. modified exhaust section, short shifter, throttle cable adjusted to zero slack, and cold air intake.

i have a lancer OZ with just a short ram intake and muffler section. we did 3 runs. he beat me off the line by half a car and then stayed like that the rest of the way. all 3 runs identical.

and yes, the 4G63 has a wide aftermarket. the lancer doesnt.

for lancer parts available:
http://www.lancerusdmparts.cjb.net/

also this place is a good source:
http://www.rpw.com.au
it seems that they're converting a lot of 4G93(mirage engine) parts to fit the 4G94 (the lancer)

good luck

i am new

I have loved lancers for like ever......Now i read on www.lancerz.com the REAL lancer evo VII is coming to US this spring 2003. non of these cheapo slow lancers.. yay cant wait. in my opinion a stock eclipse either 2002 or twin turbo 97 model would get raped by a lancer. only what 2 wheel drive ibelieve while lancer evo VII is twin turbo al lwheel drive with my HP. my brothers nissian sentra se-R spec-V can take a eclipse turbo(not twin) and that car gets 0-60 in 7.0seconds. guessing by that data lancer would beat a stock elipse. not sure if fast and furious movie was true but he needed NOS just to hit 130. hell lancer top speed stock is 150 mph. OZ rally versions are the slower as hell lancers with top speed of only 115<--suckz0rs. anyway i dunno i dont know all that much anbout cars jsut using data i have been reading on different sites.

Actually Mitsubishi has never thrown out a twin-turbo eclipse or lancer , the famous awd 4g63 eclipse (basically like a lancer with an eclipse body) was a single turbo and its way faster than any u.s. spec lancer as of right now, even the newer more tamed eclipse will beat a u.s. spec lancer, remember were not talking about J-SPEC. The turbo found in the lancer's are twin-scroll, the lancer doesn't have twin-turbo, its got a single twin-scroll blower and the same 4g63 series engine that was put into the famous awd eclipse which was in fast in the furious. That eclipse is capable of more than 130mph, believe me an eclipse with a highly tuned 4g63 motor and nitrous will kill a stock J-spec lancer!
I'm just referring to which car is better in the u.s. as of right now, eclipse's cost more money so comparing them to a u.s. lancer is kinda outta hand but someone was asking which one is better and in the u.s. its the eclipse until the EVO comes out ofcourse. The only twin-turbo stock cars out thier are the supra,300zx and one or two others i can't think of right now.
