95 3.1 148k weird noise after rpm surge HELP!!
I was driving up a slight hill last night and the rpm's surged and then the car started making this tapping sound (kinda like it was low on oil).....but there is oil in the engine....so I have NO IDEA what could be wrong and the mechanic I go to is on vacation. I was wondering what you guys that are a little more exper. think. It starts right up and drives, it's just making this godawful tapping sound. I am afraid to drive it at all because I don't want to make it any worse. PLEASE HELP....thank you

Do not run the engine till this is looked at by a mechanic, any noise such as you describe could lead to engine damage, no way to tell from here what or how serious this is!

I agree with Max. If it's not an engine sound (rod knock, collapsed lifter), it's a BAD transmission sound (possibly a torque converter), and serious damage may result if you drive it any further. Best case is when it lets go, it's going to strand you, and that's not much of a "best case".

well i just went out and now i do not have reverse....all the other gears work though. so i guess it is the transmission. thanks alot guys! i wish it were something more simple.
