92 1500 A/C problem

My A/C will abruptly stop working, and I will reset the computer by unplugging my battery terminal, and it will begin to work again. It will last for a few days, but it will eventually stop working again. Any answers??

does the compressor run? if the compressor freon is low i think it will cut out

The compressor does run and the freon level is right. The A/C will run great for a few days, but it will suddenly just stop out of nowhere. The panel starts to flash A/C, and the A/C does not work at all. Once I reset the computer though, the system begins to work great. Isn't there a temp switch somewhere in the system? I wanted to check it out, but I don't know where it is. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It sounds like low freon warning system.
What are the low and high side gauge readings at idle and at 2000rpm with air cond running?

my '91 does the same thing....i believe the control panel display is bad..i can unplug display and plug it back in and it will work from 10mins to a couple of hours....then cuts out...and flashes A/C...i found a used display for $45 and plan on buying it in the next couple of weeks....my freon is fine too....it's plenty cold when it's working.

Cold when working does not tell you if the freon level is low or high.
Sometimes a air cond will put out more cold when low on freon.
Proper testing is the key.
The system uses a low freon warig that will shut it down.
Run the freon pressure test first.
Also the sytem only uses one low cycle pressure switch.
The freon low and high side pressure test will show a bad pressure cycle switch problem and if it is low on freon.

i tried recharging my a/c to see if that fixed the blinking a/c on display and compressor not running...it did!....mt-2500 was right

first i reset the ac by disconnecting the battery,then reconnecting...then went ahead and hooked the freon can up and opened the valve on it..then cranked truck and ran a/c full blast...never blinked again and has been running greate for a week now (before, it would start blinking within a 2mins)

your truck probably uses R-12..right?..i had an old can of it so i used that...but i hear they have something called Freeze12 that's compatible w/ R-12 systems...you won't have to do a complete changeover if u use that...it's available at a lot of auto parts stores.(our local Advance didn't have it though)

Freeeze12 /artic freeze and freeze it and other crap like has a butanne/propane mixer in it.
Unless you want to have a big blow up do not use thsat crap.

So you got a wal mart death kit. One hose sure killer modle.
Crappie stop leak and who knows what kind of oil or freon.

You cannot properly and safely recharge an air condition system with them.

The one side stop and go gauge does not tell you what your system is doing or is over charged or undercharged.
A overcharged or malfunction air condition system can reach over 500 lbs of pressure.
Enough to blow up that can or system and freeze you at first and the burn you or blind you and if any propane /butane in there blow and light you up.

The stop leak crap and who knows what kind of oil in the kits there will stop your system for sure.
Just like pouring super glue in it.
And some kits even contain freon with a butane mixer.
Good for a big blast.

If you are going to do it do it right and safe.

In the older days you could just throw in a can and go.
But over the years just adding freon is getting harder to do.
Newer systems have to have the correct amount of freon down to the ounces.
Most will need pumped down and vacuumed down and the right and amount of oil and a set amount freon charge installed to get the air to cool right and the system to last.
If an air condition is low there is usually a leak that needs fixed and also a lose of lubricating oil from system.
Also air and moisture enters a low system
If you are going to try to do it get the proper type air condition gauge set with the low and high side gauges.
Hook up the gauges and get a reading with compressor running at idle and at 2000 rpm on the high and low side.
Post back pressure reading and we can help you.

thanks for the info guy...did not know any of that...so you don't recommend even changing and r-12 system over to 134a?...i saw advance had the same kit for that as walmart did...

I do not remember saying that.
But if you do it do it right.
Just buying a fitting and droping r-134 is a no no.
1= all leaks need fixed.
2= r-12 oil will not mix with r-134 freon
3=The system need flushed out and reciever dryer changed.
and proper r-134 oil needs to be added.
Some cars and systems will need more stuff.
