When turning either way I get a knock sensation in the steering wheel and also when going over rough roads. Any ideas?

Re: Knock in steering
you bushings on your sway bar could be worn and are sliping.

Re: Knock in steering
Could also be control arm bushings. My lower right one was bad and causing the same thing. Just had them replaced this weekend and that part of it is gone. I can still hear a rattle there that I need to track down but dont feel any in the steering now. Sway bar bushings are much cheaper and easier to do though so start there.
Since yours doesnt have rack and pinion steering it could also be idler arm bushings or bad tie rod ends.
