I just purchased a 1990 c1500 with a 350 and 700r4 transmission. When I bought it the engine was shot so I didn't have a chance to do much checking of noises. After replacing the engine with a remanned long block I noticed a squeaking noise coming from the torque converter/transmission. Some things I know for sure: It is not an exhaust leak (though it sounds like one), you cannot hear it from under the hood you have to be standing next to the drivers or passengers door to hear it. The noise only occurs under a load and the transmission must be in a gear (drive, reverse, 2, 1 doesn't matter). It does not occur when the transmission is not in gear. It is not the u-joints or motor/tranny mounts since you don't have to be moving for the squeak to occur. It is in perfect tune with each revolution of the engine. It is not a lifter or anything in the engine, it is definitely coming from the transmission/torque converter. Has anyone ever delt with an annoying squeak/tick like this? It is driving me nuts having put a remanned engine in and having an anoying sqeak that people tell you is an exhaust manifold leak. I think it mat be in the torque converter or the transmission pump, any thoughts?
P.S. Just to be sure it wasn't a loose torque converter I removed the bolts and moved the torque converter one clock position. The squeak/tick is exactly the same. Also, the torque converter is perfecty free and fully engaged in the pump, it is not binding and the truck drives and shifts perfectly.
