Question ??? High Pitched Squealing Noise ???

I've had this high pitched squealing/screeching noise coming from my engine. It used to do it ever so often and now it seems to be making that noise alot. You can hear it when it's idling, when at a stoplight, even driving a slow speed. I've had mention of a bearing and mention of the water pump. I also have noticed that my car tends to get warmer that normal. Usually the tick mark is right at half...but now it goes over just a tad.

Anyone have a better idea of what it might be ? At first I thought a belt of some kind needs replacing. Oh yeah, and my engine light came on a week ago or so and when it did there was a funky smell of 'burning rubber' then it went away...

Re: ??? High Pitched Squealing Noise ???

The air conditioning compressor on my 96 Achieva was making a whining sound in those same condiions but it could also being the water pump or the power steering or a problem with the belt inself or the belt tensioner. The most likely cause because of the burning smell you mention is that one of the accessorys pulley is in the process of seizing up and the belt is gotting hot by rubbing on it why its not spinning. Your best bet would probably be to see if you can pinpoint it by looking while the engine is running and if this doesn't work to remove the belt and try to spin the Alternator, water pump and air conditioning compressor by hand and pay attention to any noises or effort to move them.

edit -lol, figures that a moderator wouldn't pay attention to the date of the last post

Re: ??? High Pitched Squealing Noise ???

I replaced the water pump and it took care of the noise. I also added some more power streering fluid. Now I just need to get rid of that damn check engine light.

Thanks everybody =)

If you take it to autozone they will scan it for you for free and then you can pinpoint whats setting the code and work from there.
