'97 Voyager - Hesitation when giving it gas

Hi all. 1997 Voyager, 2.4L, 110k miles.

When giving it more than 1/4 throttle the engine is hesitating. Fuel pump is less than 2 years old, and 2 months ago I changed the plugs and air filter on this vehicle. My teenager brought it home this way with the CEL on...stupid me I didn't use the key shortcut to read it...since the battery cables had some corrosion on them, I cleaned them (thinking that may have been the problem) thus clearing the CEL light. One note though...I never had any exhaust work done on this vehicle. I suspect a clogged cat, since the symtoms are similar to other cars I've owned that needed one.

Will the Autozone service that reads codes read stored codes also? Or should I drive it around awhile and wait for the CEL light to go on and then get the codes read?

**edit** Actually...I never tried the ignition shortcut with this vehicle...my odometer is digital (if it matters)...will the on-off-on-off-on cycle work?

Re: '97 Voyager - Hesitation when giving it gas

I would probably wait till came back and get the codes . Catalyst very rarely clog up so I wouldn't lean that way ,could be something like an O2 sensor though. First I would go out and get a good fuel system (not injector) cleaner Techron or Gumout) , get a couple of bottles and run it thru the next couple tanks to rule out dirty fuel system . Also it would be a good idea to clean the throttle body with some good throttle body spray cleaner . Work from there until the codes show up again . The keydance method of getting codes should work fine on that era.

Re: '97 Voyager - Hesitation when giving it gas

Just an update...I never did get the CEL light to show up again. However...I had changed the plugs on my van over a month ago and never changed the wires. I slapped a new set of wires on there and now she runs like a champ. The resistance on the old ones (2 years old) must have been really bad!
