96 3.4L Head Removal

Wife said it started acting funny after 30 mi of driving and kept driving, 80 mi later it quit running.

Just finished with the intake gasket replacement and planned on selling it as soon as it was fixed.

Things never work out as planned.

It is still: losing coolant
running at a higher idle
overheating
temp gage stays pegged out
tach doesn't work

I got a set of rebuilt heads from work for $50 and plan on replacing the head gaskets along with the improved intake gaskets but I'm wondering how to get that front head off with that motor mount that goes around the exhaust manifold and over that stud on the head bolt. I've seen some at work that you can remove that stud with a torx bit but mine is solid. I do have another motor mount in case I need to cut it but I don't really want to do that if I don't have to. If anyone knows how to remove it I would really appreciate it.

I still need to fix the other things but big rocks then the little rocks...

Re: 96 3.4L Head Removal

You'll have to remove the front exhaust manifold which means you also will be disconnecting the cross over pipe. The motor mount bracket will also have to come off. In order to get the bracket off, you will also have to move the AC compressor (but not unhook the lines). There are two bolts that hold the compressor and bottom of the bracket to the engine. Once those are removed and the compressor is out of the way, you can remove the 3rd bolt on the bottom of the bracket. Their is 1 bolt at the top to come off. The the bracket comes straight off. There is a post and will fight but you should be able to wiggle it off.

Here is a picture of the bracket off the car. The two red circles are the AC bolt holes. The blue circle is the 3rd hole that you gain access to behind the compressor. The yellow circle is the top bolt. The green circle is the stud. The stud is also the lower left head bolt.

Check out this thread as well as this one if you have not already found them for more tips.
