those who go to automotive school/ or work in auto field.

I'm looking to go to School for automotive. Basically I have 2 choices. Either Universal tech http://www.uticorp.com/default.aspx?tabid=254&bhcp=1 and New England tech http://neit.edu/. Both of these school are costy which isn't to much of a concern to me right now. But i don't wanna dish out money for these schools and end up working in a gas station type garage changing oils and doing tune ups. I'm curious to see what type of jobs you guys who work in the auto field have. And the type of schooling and shit....and if you don't mind discussing the pay. thanks

What do you want to do? Basic repairman? Dealership? Custom shop? To just be an average mechanic, find the cheapest and closest tech school and sign up. However, if you want to work in a dealership, you would have to check into certain schools as some manufacturers take lots or only from certain schools. If you go to do custom work, then I would go with UTI. Wyotech is good too, but the are in the middle of bum-fuck nowhere. I was going to go to UTI until I decided to do more than turn a wrench for my life.

I want to work where the money is. I mean I want to customize basically.... be able to do some serious type car work. I know you gotta start at the bottom and work your way up. But i seriously don't want to go thru all the schooling and end up only making $15.00 an hour. Shit i make that working at a department store unloading trucks.

The bigger schools are "cookie cutter" schools. Meaning that they teach a mass group of students the same thing at the same time and everyone comes out with a bunch of theory but not alot of hands on plus the bigger schools you go through faster. I've talked to alot of places(dealers, garages ect) half of them havent heard of wyotech or uti and the other half wouldnt hire anyone from them. I personally go the the local CC and I have people in my class that dropped out of wyotech to go where I'm going because its just that much better and alot cheaper

Re: those who go to automotive school/ or work in auto field.

One of my college majors is Automotive technology. Its the only auto related major around here. I work as a tech in a dealership. To tell you the truth, its up to you if you want to make money. I mean if you can work fast and get a job done in 10 hours and it pays 20 you just made $350. Techs usually get an average of 18-24 hourse a day. Slow ones are around 10 and a little up. Also every techs hourly pay is different. But the principle is one: fix as much cars as possible with high paying hours for less time. Usually they strike to get the job done half the time it really takes.

Nailed it.

Basically wyotech is a joke, just ask anyone who's gone there, same thing with UTI. A fellow member and friend of mine is going to UTI right now and he's wishing he took the same program that i did at parkland college in illinois. I got my automotive management degree in two years, and it's a big part of my getting a job where i'm at. Plus do not just settle for going to school, try and get on somewhere as an entry level tech as well.

Re: those who go to automotive school/ or work in auto field.

Isnt it BMW that only hires shop techs from UTI? Cant imagine that BMW would be pulling people from a shitty program. I have 3 people that I know that went to UTI, they all love/loved it. One guy is still down there (Phoenix), one is a diesel mechanic and having a good time, the other actually works in a speed shop. Also, the guy that started that speed shop (in Fargo ND, cant remember what its called) came from UTI. Not knocking small not widely known schools but I dont think UTI would be a bad spot either. I think you should go with pr_ricer, that bastard is having his school pay to build his stroker. Fucker.

If you really want to go where the money is, take diesel.
