Question Auto sliding door & trunk

I have a 98 windstar and wondering if it's possible to install a device so I can open the sliding door and trunk with a remote.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Auto sliding door & trunk

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I don't think that '98 even had factory optional powered door and rear hatch. It wasn't until the '99 model year when that became available.

Additionally, "adding" the power option to a vehicle seems like it would be a significant cost, and you might be better off looking for a vehicle that already has that option.

Re: Auto sliding door & trunk

Yes, powered OEM door and rear hatch options not available in '98.

Theoretically, it could be possible to retrofit the hardware from later years into a '98. It would require extensive mechanical fabrication (creating new hardware and modifying existing structure), as well as custom electronics (to handle new remote channels, etc.). This sort of thing is usually reserved for the custom/hot rod crowd who enjoy the challenge, and have lots of time and money to invest.

Let's put it this way: This project would likely cost more than the van is worth, between hardware and labor. And imagine that, even if you found a way to do it, if the van were in an accident, you'd automatically lose that investment (your insurance company wouldn't be interested in covering such expensive modifications unless handled on a separate 'agreed value' rider).

I agree with bhorn: Start looking for later model that already has the options you want.

Re: Auto sliding door & trunk

bhorn & phil-I,
Thanks for the infos! I thought they have that kinda of device out there that is not expensive and won't be too complicated
As to look another car is not really an option right now. My windstar never give me any trouble since we bought it (I hope it will stay that way ). But I will definitely pick the one with auto sliding door when this windstar starts give me real problem LOL.
