95 Cherokee Stalling

95 Cherokee Sport 4.0L - It stalls cold or hot sometimes 3-4 times a day and other times it doesn't stall at all, It won't restart until I wiggle the coil. The 2 wire terminal plugin on one side is tight and clean, and on the other side is a new ignition wire going to the new cap and rotor. NEW COIL? or could this be something else? Why will it start just by touching the coil?

Re: 95 Cherokee Stalling

Sounds like something is loose with the coil. YOu said it has a new wire? I'd check that wire to make sure it's tight and correctly attached.

Re: 95 Cherokee Stalling

I've checked and rechecked the wires to the coil, they are all tight and clean.
I can't figure out why the vehicle starts just by even pushing a finger on the coil itself, without touching any wires.

Re: 95 Cherokee Stalling

Very odd....I've heard of hard/no starting with a bad Crankshaft Position Sensor also.

So you just push on the coil and it starts, regardless of key position?

Re: 95 Cherokee Stalling

No, when it stalls,
I can crank it over, but it won't start.
I pop the hood, touch the coil, crank it over, It starts immediatley.
REAL STRANGE.

Re: 95 Cherokee Stalling

Something with the coil then, either the installation or you need a new one. There are some guys on here that could tell you what the voltage should be, but I'm not one of them.

Since it's 11 years old though, I'm thinking a new coil is in order.

Re: 95 Cherokee Stalling

Thanks

I'm guessing the same, but I was looking for a logical explaination to this rare problem.

Re: 95 Cherokee Stalling

Defies logic I guess.

Re: 95 Cherokee Stalling

If the coil is lose, it may not be grounded until you touch it, try removing and cleaning the areas where it will ground when you bolt it back in.

Re: 95 Cherokee Stalling

So far, no problem yet. I didn't think about an external ground.
Thanks
