Need help with car problem! Noisy metal noise...NOT BRAKES!

I have a 97 Saturn SL1 and am getting this horribly loud metal on metal noise when I drive. It only goes away when I apply the brakes. Could this still be a brake problem? I"m confused and have to wait to take my car in, but I want to make sure I'm not going to kill it by waiting.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
~Leah

Re: Need help with car problem! Noisy metal noise...NOT BRAKES!

could be, could possibly be a wheel bearing. but mostly all the time that situation would be brakes. now i cant say your okay for a while before needing the work, hell it might be to the point that you need to take it in now before you damage the caliper. and most of the time with a noise like that and its brakes (and its disc brakes) the rotors will most likely need replaced. but with a saturn the rotors are so thin its like useless to turn them so replacement is the option
