should i buy this car??!!

ok so i saw this nice, white 94 tsi awd on dsmtuners.com. from the pictures, the body looks like its in excellent condition and so is the interior. the car is completely stock except for boost gauge and pillar pod. new brakes and rotors, new clutch slave cylinder. 126,xxx miles, no oil/coolant leaks.

but when i called the guy, he tells me that 1st and 2nd gear grind when he shifts fast. when he shifts really slow, they dont grind at all...

my friend was telling me that it might be the syncros, internal transmission work or whatever...

should i buy this car? how much money would i have to spend to make the transmission shift smoothly?

Re: should i buy this car??!!

well how much is he wanting? Hopefully not too much, it's old man.

the 92.5, 93, and 94's are kind of the "red headed stepchild" of the 1gs due to them having the 7bolt motor

I wouldn't pay more than 1500, the tranny is going out, if it's not already.

Re: should i buy this car??!!

I would buy first gen stock for $3200, I bought my talon for 3100 stock, no oil leak or any leak, running perfect ( just high idle and comon lift tick ). 1 grand is wat I offer the guy ( I dont like the way first gen look any way ).

Re: should i buy this car??!!

I love the looks of the 1g(a's and b's). But I wouldnt buy it for that much. Like stated above, 1500 be more like it. I mean it needs tranny work and if you have someone do it for you, it might cost up to a grand to fix depending on what it is. I think you could find a better deal. In my area that car isnt worth 3 grand and I gave it all the goodies that it probabaly doesnt even have some of them.. http://www.kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/kw.kc.u...;ucp;&13;EA;B2 !!!!!!!!! AND I DIDNT MENTION NEEDS TRANNY WORK!!!!

Yea.."nearly" means not every. And plus the tranny might be going, I wouldnt go any where over 2000 for it. Unless you can go take the car to get it looked at by someone you trust about the tranny. But like I said, if you buy if for two grand, make sure you have another grand for the tranny or so. Plus, timing belt should have been done twice by 126,000. Any info on that?

no. i forgot to ask about maintenance and stuff...

so what i'm thinking is that i will tell him this...when i call him later today:

-when was the last time the maintenance was done?....
-tranny is fucked up, you have to lower price or i'm not buying; not buying for more than $2k

i have another question by the way,

should i even be buying a 7bolt 1g or is it a big waste of my money/time? opinions appreciated...

Re: should i buy this car??!!

Well whats your plans with this car? Cranks on the 1g 7 bolts rarely walk(think it is less than 5% on the dsmtuners poll). Its more known for the 95.5+ 7 bolts.

I think its fine for that. Its all up to you. How far is this car from you? Can you test drive it? Find out about the timing belt and other maintance. But I'd stay around the 2k range. W/O a test drive, its iffy to buy a car.

Re: should i buy this car??!!

yeah i just talked to the guy and he said that maintenance was dones at
70k mi!!!! that was a long time ago, and it needs to be done now!

this guy lives in ohio and i live in milwaukee, WI. he said that he lives 3 hrs from chicago and i live 1 hr from chicago so 4 hours. we are meeting half way if this does happen.

we talked about the whole price thing and i got it down to $3100from $3500...the transmission is not as bad as it sounds, i guess when u treat it right there are no noises whatsoever and the guy has been driving it like that since he got it (8 months ago).

dammit...everytime i talk to him i forget to ask a question or two, now i'm wondering the compression of the engine..

well since the motor has 126,xxx, is it worth it to get it rebuilt? (since its 7bolt)

Still too pricey. Befroe you get into the engine rebuild, think about the tranny. Yea maybe it shifts ok driving normal...but you wanna mod this car, you wont be driving normal as much as most people do. 400 dollars knocked off a already high price isnt nothing when you consider it needs a bunch of maintance stuff done to it, plus tranny. I dont know, I'd keep looking around if he dont lower to at least 2ish. You are better off not rushing into anything til the right one comes a long.
