noisey cold start

suddenly have noisey cold starts that last a half a second...but still make me cringe. its just a faint knocking and then quiet.
anything to check here other than oil level?
probably due for an oil change now anyway. anyone reccommend any additives like Lucas or such to fix this?

Re: noisey cold start

It could be a filter problem, the anit-drainback valve not working quite right. Either way oil change and see what happens.

Re: noisey cold start

The anti drainback valve is part of SOME oil filters, but not all of them. It is usually on better filters.

Re: noisey cold start

By allowing the head of oil that would normally be kept in your upper galleries to drain out into the pan via your filter. When you start up, it takes time for the air to be worked out. A filter with a good anti-drainback valve prevents this from happening. AC/Delco PF52 or a decent Wix filter/NAPA Gold have good ADVs in them and prevent this startup noise.

Re: noisey cold start

I would suggest never using anything but an AC Delco or a Wix, Napa if you have to (they are made by Wix). Although if you are doing an engine flush I would suggest using a STP filter, decent filter for only a few bucks at AutoBone. Let us know if the oil change and a decent filter works for you. Good luck
