not sure about the lt1 part but a new crate GM 383 engine with carb. and dual plane intake and no mods cranks out 425hp stock

Yep if you stroke it to 383. I think someone said $600 for the block work for a 383 and a new crankshaft. I'd rather do 396

I know summit racing sells '383 stroker' kits. They are priced around $2,500 if memory serves. I think it comes with a new crank, oversized pistons, new rings, connecting rods, and a few other goodies. You'll just have to check it out for yourself.

Re: could it be? a 383? for me? maybe..

You can do a 383 with regular pistons and rods and just a cast 400 crank for cheap. Just find a clean 350 that doesnt need much at the machine shop and your good for about 400 horse round about with some ok heads.

To ask the question "how much" is not realistic. How much it makes will be determined by the cam, heads, intake, and how much the internal components themselves can handle.

Imagine the 383 stroker kit as an individual mod on a stock LT1. After that mod and before any others, what might you dyno on? Do you know people who have done this personally? Forget calculations and go from experience.

honestly I just like the number 396 over 383 but I think it would yield some small difference in power output..right? Or am I starting to weaken the block at that point?

Re: could it be? a 383? for me? maybe..

well yes, it will make a difference, but dont expect a huge one. a small increase yields a small increase, in displacement to power terms.

you may be at a point where you're need to over-bore the block, instead of just stroking it. i dont know enough about the block itself the say whether you'd weaken it. i'm sure you would, but not significantly, especailly since the overboring to increase by 13ci is spread over 8 cylinders. that's only 1.625ci per cylinder over what the stroker makes. i think if you used that stroker kit, had the engine bored and some good sleeves/pistons/rings/gudgeon pins/etc fitted you'd still be on the safe side.

i hope that's of some help.

can't bore or stroke a 350sbc to 396, 388 is its max. 396 is a big block anyway.

(Here's where Babs comes in and says he could make a 350 into... like a 720CI fire breathing dragon that pushes 16000 HP and 25000 ftlbs of torque.)

err, beat me to it.

and, a 400 crank into most 350s usualy requires quite a bit of machining to the support webbing area and shaving the main rails down to dangerously thin dementions.
