1990 5.0 mustang clutch tranny problems???????

a friend of mine has a 1990 5.0 mustang and for some reason when ur at a stop if u dont give it a little gas when putting it into first it will stall and if u put it into first slowly it grinds, all other gears work perfectly just first that is screwd up. does anyone kno if this is the clutch or tranny that is causing it and how can i fix this?? thanks

The grinding could be either a misadjusted clutch cable, bent shift fork, or bad syncros.

As for the stalling, could be a few things too. In need of a tune up, idle speed to low, TPS adjustment, dirty MAF sensor.
