I think i know

Well, i have been debating for a while on what motor to put in my camaro when i get the money, but i think i have finaly decided tell me what you guys think. I am going to buy a rebuilt 350 bored .40 over so it is really a 357 and i am going to keep it tbi but use a big tb and injectors. I want to put vortec heads and rpm vortec intake on it also. With a good cam and heads and a good tune with my headers and exhaust i plan on making around 340-350ish?? But that is not all, i am going to bottel feed this baby. i plan on doing a 125 shot so it shoul put me to about close to 450hp? What you guys think? I did not forget about the tranny either, the local tranny place is going to race build it for me.

Re: I think i know

sounds like a decent plan. i was looking into that same combo myself, until I found out a few problems. Vortec heads don't have the head crossover for egr function I need to keep street legal. Also that intake manifold has stock tbi size bores, which will hinder some performance benefits the bigger bore TBI has to offer.

I ended up buying a pair of world products heads, but then the guy who did my engine machining suggested some aluminum brodix which I exchanged the world's for and they ended up not having the egr passage either, but I really like the heads, so i'm gonna just plumb the egr another way. The intake I got is a Holley Projection which is a TBI intake with the larger 2" bores to match the bigger TBI.

Re: I think i know

Instead of boring it, I would stroke it because a used block bored .40 over really weakens the cylinder walls. Plus you get more cubes out of a stroker. Just get a new crank and connecting rods and make it a ~380 or so. A good heads and cam will really make use of the extra cubes too.

Re: I think i know

i'd bore it at least .030 over to clean up the walls of any imperfections.

belive it or not i am getting the motor without the heads intake oil pan and all of that crap for about $1,200 shiped. i will probly go with world heads any ways i was just thinking vortec because of the rpm intake. I can get a nos kit for $500 and all i have to do is hook it up and get the bottle filled. but for the tranny, i don't know how much that is going to get me for. If it is to much i will just get one of thoes sizzler trannys out of the summit or jegs catolog.

Re: I think i know

what i will probly do is keep my 305 mostly stock so i can save money. I will just get a good exhaust and put my headers on and maybe little crap like tb spacer and maybe the intake geo metioned so i will take it off the 305 then slap it on the 357 when i get it. I will get my car painted, then save for the motor and just slowly build it up.

Re: I think i know

What year is this 350? $1200 for a short block seems a little steep especially if it's gonna be bored .40 over. Around here you can get a remanufactured long block 350 that is garaunteed not to be bored more than .40 for a few hundred bucks more than that. Do you know the guy that is rebuilding this thing? Is he doing something special to it that makes it worth this much?

Re: I think i know

oh and... http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...tegoryId=10763

Seems like you're gonna be in that price range (by the time you add the heads, oil pan, etc) with the same output at the end of the day. Why waste time?

Re: I think i know

sounds like my engine exactly (check sig). anyway... it's clearly a good setup, because i built mine based of months of research and cost/performance scenarios. I just haven't added my bottle yet. if you have the money go for it.

true, if you have a smog test in your area, it will be very difficult to get it to pass (I don't). don't know if you've added it all up, but it will be pretty expensive.

i would say no stroker kit, if you have that kinda money get AFR heads instead. and stroke it later.

boring it for the purposes of getting more cubes is a bad idea. don't go .40 over if you can avoid it.

note: vortec equipment is not interchangable with most other equipment. somethin to think about if you plan on changing.

you will need/want better torque converter considering the power range.

if you want a 125hp shot, i would go with forged pistons.

here are my mistakes that maybe you'll learn from. a couple things i have to go back and fix:
-go with roller cam instead of flat tappet.
-forged pistons

the only way i can tell you if this is a good setup for you is to know how much you want to spend... it's a good setup, but there is a lot of misc stuff u need to buy that will added significantly to your cost. and if you go over budget you'll have a nice project sitting in the garage instead of on the streets for quite some time.

if it cost too much, I can help you with a different setup.
i can also email you my parts lists (with the costs listed).

Re: I think i know

well actuly the guy who is going to be building it has a store on ebay and it a good seller. I just want a 350 that makes a nice solid 330hp or so. I want it to be about 450hp with the 125 shot. You guys tell me what u think. I will probly look for a rebuilt motor that is .30 over and i will have forged deep dished pistons put in it. How much you think that will run me?

Re: I think i know

that motor on the jegs website would be perfect if it had forged pistons. And the town i live in has emmitions testing. But my dad lives one town over so i think say i live with him so i will have no testing.i WAS going to just get a 350 block from a junk yard but i just want some one to build it for me, or most of it i can do crap like put heads intake oilpan and crap like that on.
