At What Mileage is it too Late to Mod?

I know this is a broad questions, with a lot of unknowns... But assuming average wear and tear, new belts when needed (60k miles), regular fluid changes, and an average eclipse (few mods and average build from the plant)... what mileage is just too late to begin modifying a 95-99 GS-T? Basically, when will I be puting more money into fixing it than I will into modifications.

As for plans with the GS-T (if I get it) I want to keep the internals, and aim for about 350hp at the wheels... and use this as a daily driver in the summer.

Please let me know if anybody has horror stories, or just the opposite.

I've seen cars up to 160k be fine when modded. However, if you're above 120k or so, personally, I would rebuild first. Turbos don't equal engine longevity.

I moved it, what difference does it make to YOU whether it's off topic in the main or in the sub forum? Were trying to get these sub forums filled up right now, will you be able to handle this thread here or should i move it back in lieu of you having a heart attack?

I made the post because as much talk as there is about posting in the right forums, this was an obvious mistake, and was trying to help. What's more important, filling up the side forums or getting the posts where they should be?

I think subforums are great, but its this grey area shit that is the down fall of them. See, I would call this a performance topic. He is asking about modding the car right? I dont know, mods judgement I guess.

Back on topic, I would just check on the engine before you build it. If it has good compression and everything is checking out ok, I would just go for it unless its uber high milage. The Talon has 120k but the compression was 145-150 across the board before he head gasket blew (and it blew hard, that shit was gone). We'll have to see what it is after the new hg and head surface. Personally, I am going to just keep modding it until the compression sucks ass, a rod knocks, or it throws a rod.

Usually rod knocks lead to throwing rods, but in your case since you have a 1g, you could possibly throw a rod at any moment.

As for the thread not being in the correct subforum... that was my fault. I meant to put it in the performance one.

So what I'm getting from the thread is that the lower the miles the better, but as long and all the factory specs (compression, etc.) checks out... go until it blows! Works for me! lol How did that guy with 160k keep his running? Just regular maitenance? Thanks!
