That's the best way I can explain it...

torque in physics = r sin(X) F where F = force..or something like that. basically how much something has the power to turn.. hp is idk.. what is hp. lol torque is power. hp is..not really power..is it? O_o

It's a unit of measurement. It's all explained in the link I posted above.

Re: someone wanna help me get the concept?

I'm gonna try, I've been thinking about this also. Horsepower is the soft part of an engine's power. When you're driving, horsepower makes the ride smoother, smoother gear shifting. But without torque the car won't move. TORQUE jerks the car violently forward when you shift wrong, it propels the car like nothing else. You need both torque and horsepower to have a good car, period. Does that help?

Re: someone wanna help me get the concept?

I heard this somewhere:

Horsepower is how fast you go through the wall and torque is how much of the wall you take with you

I probably messed it up but it went sumthing like that, that probably doesn't help you too much but I like the saying

Re: someone wanna help me get the concept?

mm. torque = kick in the a**
hp = speed? (in the end, i guess..since some small imports have crazy hp..but almost no torque..aka S2K.).. and they are pretty fast? i guess? idk..prolly depends on gears and such too(the torque part)

Re: someone wanna help me get the concept?

l dont know how to explain but l think this is it..

torque lets you go fast at low RPM.. helps the car pulls harder, better.. maybe l am wrong..

Re: someone wanna help me get the concept?

Torque is the force that gets your car moving ... Horse power is what keeps it moving while fighting against the friction (wind).

Like it was said above ... small imports have crazy hp..but almost no torque ... think of torque as pulling power ... you wouldn't pull a boat with a 4 cylinder vehicle ... because it has no torque, but a v8 handles a boat quite well. Diesel trucks have a ton of torque, but most don't have huge hp ... so you wouldn't want to race an import with a diesel ... but the diesel could pull a trailer with many imports on, lets see the import pull one diesel truck though!

very good subject, hard to explain ....

Re: someone wanna help me get the concept?

Torque is a measure of twist. Horsepower is purely a function of torque. But they are both different ways of measuring the same thing, go juice.
A dyno measures torque only. Then takes the torque values and plugs them into the equation and comes out with the horsepower. The equation is
HP=(TQxRPM)/5252
So, at 5252 RPM's, an engines HP and TQ ratings are equal. So, if your making 250 lb/ft of torque at 5252RPM, then you are making 250hp at that same RPM.
Hope that helps. If not, then torque is for burnouts and hp is for racing.

Re: someone wanna help me get the concept?

Oh yeah, torque is also multiplied by the gear ratios. That is why cars generally have more torque in 1st and 2nd gear than any other gears.
So, lets say your engine, at the crank, was making 50lb/ft of torque and you have a 3:1 first gear and a 4:1 final drive, then your torque at the wheels will be (50x3x4) 600 lb/ft of torque. But horsepower doesn't change with the gear ratios, like I said, horsepower is a function of torque and RPM. At the same time your torque went up 1200 percent, RPM dropped the same amount. Run through the formula at either end of the gear box and you end up with the same power.
I could go on and on with gear ratios and their effects on torque and stuff, but I won't. I hope that helps.
