Won't start

Hi I drove to DIY shop and collected some flag stones, I distributed them evenly throughout the car and there was no overload. However, the car began to mis-fire and i managed to get it home...now it will not start. The plugs appear to be dry even after several attempts to start, the battery is ok, the engine turns but just does not start. A mechanic thinks it may be the ECU, but i don't want to spend a fortune on that, if its possibly something else. Any ideas?

You didnt say what year or engin the car has?
The fuel pump on the petrol 1.8 gives a lot of trouble, also does the coil packs on the engine blocks, have you checked either??
