2002 GC Fuel pump noise

Van has developed a high picthed whistle or whine the week. It is intermittent and is coming from the area of the fuel tank. Sometimes it will come on briefly when the key is turned to the ON position. Dealer says it is a noisy fuel pump that may last for 10 miles or 10 years. They suggest replacing it for $500, part is roughly $350. Van has over 96,000 miles so I guess it is possible.

Has anyone replaced on of these personally? Are there any items to watch for when doing one yourself?

All of a sudden, I seem to be spending a couple hundred a week keeping this thing going. Anyone seen any reviews on the HHR?

Well, it is true that the pump could last either 10 more miles or 10 more years. Sometimes these pumps will whine with age, but it doesn't necessarily mean the failure is soon to follow. But sometimes "piece of mind" is priceless.

Now, $350 just for the pump itself? BOHICA! I think you can find one cheaper if you shop around. If you are a DIY'er like me, you can replace this in a couple of hours. If not, find an independent mechanic who can do this for less, and buy the part yourself.

I have a 1998 Town & Country with 93,000 miles. The van has been trouble free for me.

Re: 2002 GC Fuel pump noise

Thanks, that is what I decided. Found a pump assembly at the local auto parts store for $160. I will be installing it later this week. Just a matter of finding the time.

The one year warranty pump is $160 and the lifetime warranty pump is $380. I can't imagine that there is that much difference in quality. I would guess that is their way of paying for the extra warranty.
