Question My car needs a new engine! Please Help?

Hi I'm new! I've had my 2002 for about 4 months now. We have been doing small repairs for the last few months at my frends house. But he sold his house so it was time to move the car. We thought she was ready to go. We made it about halfway to my house when she was pretty much dead, and we towed it the rest of the way. Now I'm not the richest man in the world so I can't afford any new engines, but I was wondering if any of you knew what size American engine would fit in my 2002? I have heard a Ford 3.8 might fit but i don't know. I at least want a 6 cylinder engine, but remember I need an engine that works well, and for a pretty good price. Any one have any ideas or any links about people who have done this?

Take the engine from a 318i late seventies. It has the same engine. M10. or you could take one of the baby sixes M20 2.0 to 2.5 liter displacement. Sixes are nice because they have perfect balance. They can be made to goo too. 2000 lbs and 150 hp sounds good to me considering you wouldn't have to do much to the M20. THe conversion is fairly involved. It bolts up but it is a tight fit. I plan to either turbocharge the M10 in my 2002 or drop in either a S14 from an E30 M3 if I can find one or the other option is Take a 13B or 12A rotary from a mazda. hope it helps. I wouldn't put in a 2.3L ford but if you do, Take from a '87 SVO Msutange or a Merkur. The 2.5L ford ranger motor is basically a strocked pinto motor.
