Taking heads off with engine in bay

Yeah I've never taken the heads off with the engine in the car... last time I had the heads off was when I had the engine out and I built them then... buuuutttt... I need them off agian and I really dont want to take the engine out... and according the Brain at GTPro its imposible to remove the rear head unless the engine is removed... I think other wise... though I do have ARP head studs so it would make it a bit more difficult then the reg old head bolts... so anyone out there had the heads off with the engine still in the bay... and have any probs with it? hit me up... help me out alot if you did, thx.

oh and I did look at stealth316 and 3s and what not... no luck. I plan on makeing step by step instructions for those haveing to do it blind sited like me... and I will send them to stealth316.

Re: Taking heads off with engine in bay

Im pretty sure it would be hard as hell to remove them with the engine in the car. Im and very much up for watching and laughing while you try.

Listen to brian. Just because something can be done one way doesnt make it easyer to do it that way.

Re: Taking heads off with engine in bay

The rear head can be removed with the engine in the car BUT it is a PITA. It would probably be less time to pull the whole engine to do the heads than it would actually be to do it with engine in the car. Trust me on this. I made the mistake of trying to swap heads with the engine in the car and spent more time cussing something than actually getting something accomplished

Pull the tranny with the engine. Its not that hard. Esp. when your torn down far enough to take the heads off the engine.

Re: Taking heads off with engine in bay

I cant get the engine out in 2 or 3 hrs... i dont have a lift... just a shop with a jack... the tranny alone will take me just the same amount of time... and i wont have probs with the torque because all the hard screws where on the heat shileds and oil and water lines... and now i have stanless steel lines (long over due), and im wraping all the O2 housings, turbo housings, and downpipe with heat wrap and doing with out the heat sheilds... the turbo was the easiest thing... and it took 10 hours because i took my time not to break or screw anything up... honestly i could cut the time in half the second time around... plus i was takeing pics...

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.
