Not the smooth ride I would expect.

I have a 2000 Mustang Convertible.
It has the V-6 engine.
Overall, the car is in good running shape.
I think that the ride is a little rough though.
When I say rough...I am not talking about the engine or the balance on the wheels. These seem to be fine. Also, the alignment is good.
What I mean is that, compared to my other 2 cars, it is a little bit like riding in a tank. (My other 2 cars are a 99 Explorer and a 95 BMW 318is)
The ride in the Mustang is simply not smooth.
The car has about 95K and they are mostly highway miles.

I do not want to shotgun this fix but I am not really sure how too go about diagnosing this trouble.
What should I look for and how what would be the signs on what I look at that it is a bad part?

I can not tell you much about how long this has been going on...I can not tell you if it was sudden or gradual over time. My wife drives the car and I would have better luck getting such details from my 4 y/o.

First of all, a Mustang is NOT going to ride smoothly like an Explorer or a BMW sedan. It is afterall a sports car. But, with 95 K on the car, I would start by replacing shocks and struts on the car as that is more than likely where the deterioration has occured. Replace them with stock Ford shocks and struts or a compatible replacement from Monroe or Gabriel and it should ride like new again.

I was not suprised to see that the car does not ride like an Explorer.
I was a little suprised to find that it rode rougher than a 3 series BMW which is also a sports car.


I think that you are correct in the shocks and struts.
BTW..thank you for giving some brand names.
I was wondering what would be good quality and reasonably priced replacements.
